What Minnesotans Can Do to Protect Against Uninsured or Underinsured Motorists

Dave Langevin - Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Despite the fact it is illegal to drive a car in Minnesota without insurance, recent estimates suggest roughly one out of five (20%) vehicles on Minnesota roads are in fact uninsured (no insurance).  In addition, the majority of motorists with car insurance are most likely underinsured (not enough insurance).  However, there is something you can do to protect you and your family against a car accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver.

Minnesota law requires motorists carry both UM (uninsured motorist) and UIM (underinsured motorist) insurance coverage.  Like Minnesota No-Fault claims, UM / UIM coverage is first-party coverage, meaning you bring these claims against your own insurance company.  Essentially, your insurance company takes the place of the uninsured or underinsured motorist.

The minimum amount of UM / UIM coverage allowed to be sold in the state of Minnesota is $25,000.00 per person, with a maximum payout of $50,000.00 per accident. Unfortunately, this may not be enough coverage.

Many individuals, and even insurance agents, focus exclusively on increasing liability insurance, also known as bodily injury (BI) coverage. Increasing BI coverage beyond the $30,000.00 minimum is not a bad idea. However, UM / UIM coverage shoudl not be overlooked.  This is because BI coverage is intended to cover everyone except you and your family.  UM / UIM coverage is coverage meant to provide you and your family pain and suffering coverage in the event the car accident was caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver.

It is very important to have the largest amount of UM / UIM coverage you can afford.  You will be amazed at how inexpensive it is to increase the UM / UIM limits to $100,000.00 / $300,000.00, or more.
